13 August 2019 - Setting Out

On the first day of 2019 I was on a walk on the outskirts of Bath.  An elderly woman in the group was telling me of her time volunteering in a South African game reserve and I remember thinking how interesting it seemed.  A few weeks on and my mind for some reason turned to that conversation again but with renewed interest; it seemed to me to provide an opportunity for a meaningful trip to Africa, a chance to see the wildlife while contributing to their environment. A search on the internet led me to the game reserve in question and a few email queries - and some pounds - later I had a reservation for a month at Shamwari Game reserve in the east of South Africa.

I am now packed and ready to go and, other than the thought of the flight to Germany, a 3 hour stopover, and then a 12 hour flight to Cape Town, I am excited by the thought of the next few weeks.

  1. I envy the experience you are embarking on, but not the 12 hour flight. Safe travels, take (and share) lots of pictures, particularly you hand feeding the large felines.
